Most affiliate networks track clicks, conversions, and revenue — the three metrics on every dashboard. But these tell you what happened, not why, and definitely not what is about to go wrong. Here are the 15 metrics that actually predict network health and protect margins.
Click Quality Metrics (1–4)
These four metrics measure the quality of traffic before it reaches the advertiser. Poor click quality is the root cause of most fraud, conversion rate problems, and advertiser churn.
Fraud Rate
Percentage of clicks flagged as invalid. Target: below 5%. Above 10% indicates a systemic publisher quality problem requiring immediate action.
Click-to-Conversion Ratio by Publisher
Massive variance across publishers (e.g. Publisher A 8%, Publisher B 0.1%) indicates publisher-specific traffic quality issues, not an offer problem.
Time-to-Conversion Distribution
Long average times (>7 days) combined with last-click attribution means you are almost certainly underpaying awareness publishers.
Duplicate Click Rate
High rates (>3%) indicate publisher-side click manipulation or tracking configuration errors. Investigate before paying.
Publisher Health Metrics (5–8)
Publisher Activation Rate
Percentage of approved publishers who send at least one click within 30 days. Target: above 65%. Below 50% indicates an onboarding or offer relevance problem.
Publisher Churn Rate
Monthly percentage of active publishers who go inactive. Target: below 8%. Above 12% indicates commission competitiveness or payment experience issues.
EPC Distribution
Wide variance in Earnings Per Click across publishers sending to the same offer indicates a landing page problem, not a publisher problem.
Publisher Risk Score Distribution
What percentage of your active publishers are in each risk tier? Aim for 70%+ in Low risk. Growing Medium/High tiers signal recruitment quality degradation.
Campaign Performance Metrics (9–12)
Advertiser ROI by Offer
Which offers actually make money for advertisers? This is the only sustainable basis for setting commission rates. Offers with negative advertiser ROI will be cancelled.
CVR Variance by Traffic Source
CVR should be consistent within a traffic source type. Sudden spikes indicate fraud or landing page changes that need immediate investigation.
Average Order Value by Publisher
Low AOV publishers may be incentivising coupon use that cannibalises full-price sales. Segment AOV by publisher and set minimum AOV thresholds.
Incremental Revenue Contribution
How much revenue would have occurred without the affiliate channel? Networks that can demonstrate true incrementality command higher advertiser budgets.
Financial Health Metrics (13–15)
Payout Efficiency Ratio (13): Total payouts as a percentage of revenue generated by the affiliate channel. Target 20–35% depending on your model. Below 20% suggests you are underinvesting in publisher commissions; above 40% suggests commission structure review is needed.
Disputed Conversion Rate (14): Percentage of conversions challenged by advertisers. Above 3% signals tracking issues, fraud slipping through, or offer misalignment. Each dispute represents a damaged advertiser relationship.
Days Payable Outstanding (15): Average days between conversion confirmation and publisher payment. Critical for publisher satisfaction — top publishers prioritise networks that pay on time, every time. Target under 30 days; under 15 days wins the best publishers.
