    Where UTMs stop working

UTMs are query parameters on a URL. That is all they are, and it is worth knowing the three places where that is not enough — because most reporting arguments come from one of them.

The click never reaches a browser

A mobile app install, a server-to-server postback, a conversion confirmed by phone. There is no page load, so there is no URL and no UTM. Those need click IDs and postbacks, not tags.

    Someone strips the parameters

Redirect chains, link shorteners and some in-app browsers drop query strings. The visit still arrives, it just arrives as direct traffic and your campaign gets no credit.

    The journey crosses devices

Tagged click on a phone, purchase on a laptop a day later. The UTM lives on the first session only, so the sale is attributed to whatever the second session looked like.
