The commission model you choose does more than determine how much you pay publishers — it fundamentally shapes which publishers join your program, how they promote you, and what kind of traffic quality you attract. Choosing the wrong model is one of the most common and costly mistakes in affiliate marketing.

CPA — Cost Per Acquisition

CPA pays a fixed amount per completed action — a purchase, subscription, or sign-up. It is the most common model in performance marketing because risk is fully on the publisher side: you only pay when value is delivered.

$50–500
Finance leads
$30–150
SaaS trials
$5–50
E-commerce purchases
$2–15

CPA Quality Risk

CPA without quality controls attracts publishers who optimise for quantity over quality. Set minimum conversion thresholds, chargeback caps, and quality score requirements — or you will pay for conversions that generate zero long-term customer value.

CPL — Cost Per Lead

CPL pays for a qualified lead — an email sign-up, form submission, or trial request — without requiring a purchase. This is ideal for high-consideration purchases (mortgages, insurance, B2B software) where the sales cycle is long and the advertiser's sales team closes the deal.

Set strict lead quality criteria upfront: minimum data fields required, email validation, phone number verification, duplicate suppression window, and maximum age of lead. Loose criteria invites form-stuffing and bot submissions that look like leads but have zero commercial value.

CPS — Cost Per Sale

CPS pays a percentage commission on actual revenue — the standard model for e-commerce affiliate programs. The percentage naturally aligns publisher incentives with order value, encouraging promotion of higher-ticket items and full-price sales over discounted ones.

VerticalTypical CPS RateNotes
Consumer Electronics3–8%High AOV, low margins
Fashion & Apparel8–15%Mid margins, high returns rate
Digital Products20–50%Zero COGS — generous CPS viable
Health & Beauty10–20%Strong repeat purchase potential
Travel3–10%High AOV compensates low %

RevShare — Revenue Share

RevShare pays publishers a recurring percentage of the revenue their referred customers generate — monthly, for the lifetime of the customer or a defined period. Common in SaaS (15–30% MRR) and financial services (trailing commissions on premiums).

RevShare attracts the highest-quality publishers because the long-term earning potential rewards genuine audience trust and careful audience selection. A publisher who sends 10 high-quality SaaS sign-ups earns recurring commissions for years — incentivising them to only send users who will actually stay subscribed.

RevShare Publisher Retention

Publishers on RevShare structures have a 4× lower annual churn rate than publishers on CPA-only programs. Once a publisher starts earning recurring commissions, switching to a competitor's CPA offer becomes economically irrational.

Hybrid Models

The most sophisticated programs combine models. A SaaS company might pay a $50 CPA on trial sign-ups plus 15% RevShare on months 1–12. An e-commerce brand pays a $5 base CPA plus 8% CPS — the base attracts volume publishers, the percentage rewards quality. Hybrid models reduce churn in your publisher mix and improve long-term publisher lifetime value.

Preguntas frecuentes

What is the difference between CPA and CPS?

CPA pays a fixed amount per qualifying action (signup, deposit, install), while CPS pays a percentage of the sale value. CPA suits lead-driven funnels; CPS aligns publisher earnings with actual ingresos.

What is RevShare in marketing de afiliación?

RevShare pays publishers an ongoing percentage of the ingresos their referred customers generate over time, rather than a one-off bounty. It is standard in subscriptions, iGaming, and finance, where customer lifetime value accrues for months or years.

Qué commission model attracts the best affiliates?

High-quality publishers optimise for effective EPC, not the model label. Offer the structure that matches your economics, publish realistic EPC benchmarks, and pay reliably — pago credibility outweighs headline rates.
