Every affiliate buying traffic has to answer one question before scaling a campaign: is a click on this offer worth more than it costs me? EPC — earnings per click — is the number that answers it. It folds conversion rate and payout into a single figure you can put next to your cost per click. It is also one of the most misread numbers in affiliate marketing. This guide covers the formula, two worked examples, the traps, and what actually moves it.

What EPC Measures

EPC is the average commission a single click earns. A high conversion rate on a small payout and a low conversion rate on a large payout can produce the same EPC, which is exactly why it is useful: it lets you compare offers with different payout models on one scale. It sits alongside conversion rate, reversal rate and payout in the core set of affiliate marketing KPIs, and it is the one most affiliates look at first.

Networks and affiliates read it from opposite sides. For an affiliate, EPC is revenue per click they send. For a network or advertiser, the same figure is what a click from that affiliate is worth to the program — and the basis for deciding who gets a higher payout or a private offer.

The Formula, With Two Worked Examples

EPC = total commission earned ÷ number of clicks.

Equivalently, EPC = conversion rate × commission per conversion. Both give the same answer; the second shows you which lever to pull.

Example 1 — a CPA offer. You send 10,000 clicks. The offer converts at 2.5%, so you get 250 conversions at a $25 CPA: $6,250 in commission. EPC = $6,250 ÷ 10,000 = $0.625.

Example 2 — a RevShare ecommerce offer. You send 10,000 clicks. 2% become orders — 200 orders — with an average order value of $120, and you earn 15% of revenue. Commission = 200 × $120 × 15% = $3,600. EPC = $3,600 ÷ 10,000 = $0.36. If the difference between CPA, CPS and RevShare is new to you, that guide covers the models in detail.

One convention to watch: some networks quote EPC per 100 clicks rather than per click. The CPA example above would then read $62.50. Always check which convention a number uses before comparing offers across networks. The free EPC calculator runs these numbers for you, including RevShare offers.

EPC Versus What a Click Costs You

EPC on its own tells you what a click earns. Profit comes from comparing it with what the click cost: profit per click = EPC − CPC. That makes EPC your break-even cost per click — the most you can pay for traffic before the campaign loses money.

Buy both campaigns above at $0.40 a click. The CPA offer earns $0.625 and costs $0.40, so each click makes $0.225 — $2,250 across 10,000 clicks. The RevShare offer earns $0.36 and costs $0.40, so each click loses $0.04 — $400 across the same volume. Same traffic, same cost, opposite results. That comparison, not either EPC alone, is the decision.

Negotiate from break-even, not from the payout

If you know your EPC and your traffic cost, you know how much margin a payout increase would add. That is a far stronger basis for asking a network for a higher CPA than "other affiliates get more".

Four Ways EPC Misleads

1. Small samples. At a 2.5% conversion rate, 200 clicks should produce about five conversions. One conversion more or less moves EPC by $0.125 — twenty per cent of the whole figure. Treat EPC on a few hundred clicks as noise, and only compare sources of similar size.

2. Reversals. EPC calculated on gross conversions assumes every conversion is paid. If 10% of the CPA conversions above are later rejected or charged back, your real EPC is $0.5625, not $0.625. Track EPC on approved conversions, and watch the reversal rate separately — a source with a rising reversal rate is often a fraud problem before it is a quality problem.

3. Averages hide the mix. An offer's EPC is an average across every country, device and placement you sent. A strong mobile EPC can hide a desktop segment that loses money on every click. Break EPC down before you scale anything.

4. RevShare time lag. RevShare commission keeps arriving after the click — repeat purchases, renewals, player activity. EPC measured a week after a campaign understates what the traffic will eventually earn. Compare RevShare offers on the same time window, and revisit them once the revenue has matured.

How to Raise EPC

  • Match traffic to the offer. Send each geo and device to the offer that converts for it. Targeting rules and routing do this automatically instead of by hand.
  • Cut the placements that pay below cost. Tag every click with sub-IDs for source, placement and creative, then stop buying the ones whose EPC sits under their CPC.
  • Let routing follow performance. A smart link with performance routing shifts clicks toward whichever offer is converting best right now.
  • Test the landing experience. Conversion rate is half of EPC. A pre-lander or landing page that converts one point better lifts EPC just as much as a higher payout.
  • Stop losing conversions to tracking. Browser pixels miss conversions to ad blockers and cookie limits, and every missed conversion lowers measured EPC. Server-to-server postbacks close that gap.
  • Renegotiate with data. Once your EPC and reversal rate are stable, use them to ask for a higher payout or a private offer.

Tracking EPC Properly

The useful EPC is not a single number on a dashboard; it is EPC broken down by offer, affiliate, country, device and sub-ID, on approved conversions, over a window long enough to mean something. Affclix reports EPC in its click reports alongside conversion rate and payout, and every dimension above is a breakdown, so the losing segment inside a profitable-looking offer shows up before it costs you a month of budget.

Start with the EPC calculator to model an offer before you buy traffic, then track the real number once clicks are flowing.

Questions fréquentes

How do you calculate EPC?

Divide the total commission earned by the number of clicks that produced it. 250 conversions at a $25 CPA from 10,000 clicks is $6,250 ÷ 10,000 = $0.625 EPC. Some networks quote EPC per 100 clicks instead, so check which convention a figure uses before comparing it.

What is a good EPC?

There is no universal good EPC — it depends on the vertical, the payout model and what the traffic costs you. The useful test is whether EPC is higher than your cost per click: the gap is your profit per click.

Why is my EPC different from the network's advertised EPC?

An advertised EPC is an average across every affiliate and traffic source on the offer, often over a long window. Your traffic mix, geos, devices and reversal rate differ, so your own EPC is the only one to plan with.
